Ambrose Bierce enhanced René Decartes’ famous logical proof that we exist, “Cogito ergo sum” (I think, therefore, I am), by extrapolating one step further: “Cogito cogito ergo cogito sum.” (I’m not sure if this is correct Latin grammar, but it makes the point.) In English: “I think I think, therefore, I think I am.”
“Cogito cogito ergo cogito sum,” then, is the inspiration for this blog. The way to better understanding is to inquire about everything, particularly assumptions and dearly held values.
Also, I think, we should examine statements from our leaders and news sources with a skeptical eye. Clearly, we should examine the logic behind what is said and reported, but more importantly, we should seek a better understanding of the assumptions and basic values that underly the logic.
